Cat breeds with blue eyes

Blue-eyed cats fascinate. On Pedibase, several cat breeds have this look almost systematically; others display it only in certain colors or patterns. This guide lists the breeds concerned, explains why blue appears, and links to profiles and breeders.

Please note: a white European cat with blue eyes is not « a breed ». Here, we are talking about recognized breeds listed in the Pedibase catalog, with their nuances.

Why some cats have blue eyes

Three situations come up often.

  • Colourpoint coat (Siamese type): the darker « points » pattern on the face, ears, legs and tail almost always comes with blue eyes. This is the case for the Siamese, Balinese, Ragdoll, Birman, Thai, Snowshoe, Himalayan…
  • Dominant white gene: a white cat (Turkish Angora, Turkish Van, certain lines) may have both blue eyes, both amber eyes, or one of each (odd eyes).
  • Breeds selected for blue: the Ojos Azules and the Céleste place the blue gaze at the heart of the standard, without necessarily being colourpoint.

The Russian Blue, despite its name, has green eyes. The word « blue » here refers to the coat, not the gaze.

Breeds with blue eyes « almost always »

Siamese

The Siamese is the reference: slender body, contrasting points, intense almond-shaped blue eyes. Around 70 breeders listed on Pedibase. Vocal, sociable, requires company. Ideal if you want the most classic « colourpoint + blue eyes » combination.

Seal point Siamese with blue eyes

Ragdoll

The Ragdoll has oval eyes of a deep blue. Large size, calm temperament, highly sought after: more than 250 breeders on Pedibase. Colourpoint or mitted depending on the lines, blue remains the rule.

Ragdoll with blue eyes

Birman

The Birman is recognizable by its white gloves and blue eyes. A breed very present in France (more than 300 breeders listed). Calm, attached to its family, with medium-long coat care to plan for.

Thai

The Thai is the oriental « old type »: less extreme than some modern Siamese, with oval eyes of an intense blue. Fewer breeders than a Ragdoll, but a real option if you like colourpoint without the ultra-slender build.

Balinese

The Balinese is in practice a medium-long-haired Siamese: the same almond-shaped blue eyes, the same expressive side. Breeding availability is rarer in France.

Balinese with a blue gaze

Snowshoe

The Snowshoe combines Siamese-style points and white « socks ». Fairly large, slightly slanted blue eyes. A rare breed: few breeders, so look early.

Snowshoe with blue eyes

Himalayan

The Himalayan takes the Persian build with a colourpoint coat: large blue eyes. The same care requirements as a Persian (coat, eyes, breathing depending on the lines).

Colourpoint Himalayan with blue eyes

Céleste

The Céleste highlights large blue eyes in a semi-long type, with soft contours. A little-known breed, to discover through its profile and the available breeders.

Ojos Azules

The Ojos Azules (« blue eyes » in Spanish) was selected for this gaze, in varied coats. Very low numbers: check the seriousness of the line and health advice before any plans.

Breeds where blue is possible, not systematic

Tonkinese

The Tonkinese crosses Siamese and Burmese. Depending on the pattern (mink, point, solid), the eyes may be blue, aqua or amber. Ask the breeder about the typical eye color of the litter.

Turkish Van

The Turkish Van may have amber eyes, blue eyes, or one of each. White often dominates the coat; blue is only one of the standard's options.

Turkish Van

Persian and colourpoint Exotic

The Persian and the Exotic do not always have blue eyes. In colourpoint, blue becomes the rule, as in the Himalayan. In other colors, the gaze tends to follow the coat (copper, orange, etc.).

Turkish Angora and white cats

The Turkish Angora may have blue eyes, especially against a white background, sometimes odd-eyed. This is not a guarantee: read the line's standard and see the parents.

What you need to know before adopting

  • Deafness: in white cats with blue eyes, the risk of hereditary deafness is higher. A serious breeder discusses it and can direct you toward tests / BAER depending on the case. This risk is not the same in a classic colourpoint Siamese.
  • Care: long coat (Birman, Ragdoll, Himalayan, Céleste) = regular brushing. Persian / Himalayan eyes = more frequent cleaning.
  • Temperament: Siamese and Thai are often more vocal and demanding; Ragdoll and Birman calmer. Blue eyes say nothing about volume.
  • LOOF: for a recognized breed, ask about the LOOF framework and check the breeder.

To compare two profiles, use the breed comparison tool or the choosing your cat guide. To meet a breeder: how to choose a cat breeder.

Quick table

  • Always / overwhelmingly blue: Siamese, Balinese, Ragdoll, Birman, Thai, Snowshoe, Himalayan, Céleste, Ojos Azules.
  • Sometimes blue: Tonkinese, Turkish Van, colourpoint Persian / Exotic, Turkish Angora (especially white).
  • Not blue eyes despite the name: Russian Blue (green eyes).

In summary

If you are looking for a pedigree cat with blue eyes, start with colourpoints (Siamese, Ragdoll, Birman, Thai, Balinese, Snowshoe, Himalayan) and breeds centered on this gaze (Céleste, Ojos Azules). Then check whether blue is mandatory or optional (Tonkinese, Van, Angora). Then visit a breeder: you can see the gaze in the parents, and the seriousness too.
