Origins

Where does it come from?

The Posavatz Hound is an ancient breed originating from Croatia, more precisely from the Sava valley south-east of Zagreb. Depictions of dogs of this type appear in frescoes, chronicles and Croatian works as early as the 15th century. The breed was presented at a dog show in 1924 and its modern standard was established in 1969 under the name Sava Valley Hound. The FCI definitively recognized the breed on 4 August 1955.

Appearance

What does it look like?

The Posavatz Scenthound is a medium-sized dog, of robust and harmonious build, of slightly rectangular format, the length of the body exceeding the height at the withers. Its coat is wheat-red in different shades, with frequent white markings on the head, neck, chest, belly, lower parts of the limbs and the tip of the tail. The hair is short, lying flat, stiff and dense. The chest is deep, the back straight and muscular, the ears pendant of moderate length and the dark brown eyes express a lively intelligence.

Temperament

Temperament and personality

Lively, pleasant to live with and rather docile, the Posavatz Hound is attached to its owner without being excessively demonstrative. It is neither nervous nor aggressive and is generally good with children. A versatile hunting dog, it retains fine endurance, a good capacity for initiative and a clear voice typical of scenthounds.

Playful Sociable

Living together

Living with children and other pets

This dog needs regular physical activity and an environment that allows it to use its scenting ability and endurance. It is more fulfilled in the countryside, but can adapt to an urban setting if its outings are long, frequent and varied. If it lacks exercise or mental stimulation, it can become bored more easily than a very sedentary companion dog.

Training

Training and socialization

For a scenthound, he proves relatively obedient and receptive to training, provided he is guided consistently. A balanced method, firm without brutality, with clear guidelines and motivating exercises gives good results. Recall, scent management and early socialization deserve particular attention given his hunting heritage.

Budget

Price and budget for the Posavac Hound

The purchase price varies depending on the quality of the breeding kennel, the availability of the breed, the selection work and the health monitoring of the breeding dogs. For a rare breed, it is important to prioritize traceability, socialization and health guarantees rather than an ad at an abnormally low price.

Health

Health at a glance
