The life expectancy of the Podenco Ibicenco is generally between 12 and 14 years. This decent longevity is observed especially in individuals kept at an appropriate weight, fed a quality diet and monitored regularly for possible joint, eye or endocrine disorders.

A robust breed?
The Podenco Ibicenco shows good endurance and a lean build that allow it to remain efficient for a long time. Its hardiness does not, however, exempt one from being vigilant about the skin, the joints and certain hereditary disorders reported in the breed.

Particular attention must be paid to locomotion, vision, hearing and skin condition. As with many athletic and slender dogs, early observation of discomfort, lameness or a change in behavior helps to intervene quickly.
Cataract : An opacification of the lens can progressively impair vision and requires ophthalmological monitoring.
Hip dysplasia : This joint abnormality can promote pain, lameness and early wear depending on its severity.
Epilepsy : Seizures may occur in some individuals and require a thorough veterinary assessment.
Deafness : A decrease or absence of hearing can complicate communication and warrants the earliest possible detection.
Hypothyroidism : This hormonal disorder can lead to fatigue, weight gain and skin or coat changes.

Cold and heat tolerance
The Podenco Ibicenco tolerates heat well, but much less cold, especially in the short-haired varieties and in very lean subjects. In cold or damp weather, it appreciates suitable outings and a well-insulated bed. In summer, intense effort must remain compatible with hydration and the least hot hours.

Tendency to gain weight
The Podenco Ibicenco is naturally lean and athletic, but an imbalance between ration and activity can nevertheless impair its condition. Maintaining a slim silhouette, with ribs palpable without excess, remains a good practical guideline. During periods of reduced activity, the ration must be readjusted to avoid any unnecessary weight gain.
