Origins

Where does it come from?

As its name indicates, the Podenco Canario originates from the Canary Islands, in Spain. A very ancient breed, it is said to descend from primitive-type dogs brought by navigators of Antiquity, then selected for centuries for rabbit hunting on difficult volcanic terrain. Its reputation was built on its courage, its scenting ability and its endurance.

Appearance

What does it look like?

The Podenco Canario is a medium-sized dog, slender and inscribable in a rectangle, with lean and functional musculature. Its head is long, the stop is little marked, the almond-shaped eyes express attentiveness and nobility, and its large erect ears give it a very recognizable silhouette. Its coat is short, smooth and dense, most often red more or less intense and white.

Temperament

Temperament and personality

Lively, courageous and very determined, the Podenco Canario has the temperament of a true hunting dog. He is very attached to his owner, loyal and close to his family, while keeping a degree of independence and a strong sensitivity to his environment. His chasing instinct remains pronounced, especially when faced with small animals.

Affectionate Playful

Living together

Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, it is an active dog that needs long outings, sensory stimulation and a consistent framework to remain balanced. It may seem nervous if it lacks exercise, but it is not naturally aggressive. It appreciates secure outdoor spaces and proves far more fulfilled in an environment that allows it to run and explore.

Training

Training and socialization

Its training must be early, firm but always fair, without brutality. Positive reinforcement works well with this dynamic dog, especially if the sessions are varied and motivating. Serious socialization is important from the youngest age in order to better channel its hunting instinct and improve its cohabitation with other animals.

Budget

Price and budget for the Canary Hound

The price of a Podenco Canario varies depending on the lineage, the seriousness of the breeding, the screenings and the socialization. The maintenance budget (food, veterinarian, training) often exceeds the purchase price over time.
