Diet

Feeding your Hanover Hound well

Germany

Its diet must be of quality and adapted to its age, its size and its level of physical activity. Needs increase during periods of hunting or sustained work.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Choose a complete diet adapted to age, size and growth-related needs.

  • Adult : Adjust the ration to the activity level, especially during the hunting season.

  • Senior : Adapt the energy intake to age and activity in order to limit weight gain.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

A complete, quality diet, chosen according to age, size and intensity of activity, is suitable for the breed. During hunting season, richer foods can be offered if energy expenditure justifies it.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount must be adjusted to the dog’s actual activity. The ration can be increased during the hunting season, without exceeding its needs in order to prevent overweight.

WeightDaily amountMeals/day

32 - 33 kg495 - 677 g2
33 - 35 kg518 - 709 g2

Change

Managing the food transition

Any change of food must be gradual over seven to ten days, by gradually increasing the proportion of the new food to limit digestive upsets.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times. Needs increase with heat, exertion and a dry diet. Take water along on walks and offer regular breaks.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats must remain measured and be integrated into the daily energy intake so as not to encourage overfeeding.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Adjust the ration to the age, size and activity level.
  • Gradually increase the intake during periods of intense hunting.
  • Avoid overfeeding despite high physical expenditure.

Never give

Chocolate, grapes, xylitol, onion, garlic, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods are dangerous for dogs. In case of ingestion, contact a veterinarian quickly.
