  • Canine sociability: It generally cohabits well with its congeners when it is properly socialized.
  • Exercise needs: He does not tolerate an overly sedentary life well and requires real outings.
  • Strong hunting instinct: An interesting scent can quickly take over if recall is not solid.
  • Apartment living is difficult: His size, his voice and his need for space make him poorly suited to this lifestyle.

Who is it for?

  • Active owners: The breed is well suited to people who enjoy long walks and going out often.

  • Scent hound enthusiasts: Its temperament, its nose and its independence appeal particularly to hunting dog connoisseurs.

Not recommended for

Origins

Where does it come from?

The Black and Tan Coonhound is an American breed developed for raccoon hunting, a mission that its name evokes both through its black and tan coat and through its function. Selected to follow a scent trail with tenacity, it could also be used on larger game. Its distant ancestors are said to be Talbot hounds, later influenced in England by other hunting lines. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1945 and then by the FCI the same year.

Appearance

What does it look like?

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a large scenthound with a powerful, well-built body. Its neck is muscular, its back straight and its rather low-set tail rises when it is in action. Its oval-shaped head has long, drooping ears, almost round hazel eyes and a black nose with well-opened nostrils. Its coat is short, dense and protective. The coat is coal black with tan markings above the eyes, on the muzzle, the chest and the limbs.

Temperament

Temperament and personality

Hard-working, courageous and determined, the Black and Tan Coonhound is above all an excellent tracking dog. With the family, he is loyal, sociable and generally even-tempered. He likes children and readily lives with his fellow dogs. Reserved with strangers without being aggressive, he is not a true guard dog despite a certain natural wariness.

Affectionate Playful Intelligent Sociable

Living together

Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, the Black and Tan Coonhound needs activity and space to stay comfortable in its paws. Its hunting instinct remains very present and can push it to follow a scent insistently. It likes long outings, natural environments and playtime with its human. If it is insufficiently stimulated, it can become noisy or try to take off on an interesting trail.

Training

Training and socialization

The education of the Black and Tan Coonhound must start early and remain consistent, firm and respectful. It is an intelligent dog, but it can be independent and does not like brutality. Recall is a priority learning given its scenting ability and its taste for pursuit. A positive, regular and motivating method generally gives the best results.

Health

Health at a glance

The Black and Tan Coonhound is overall a robust dog, but like many large active breeds, it deserves serious monitoring throughout its life. Orthopedic and ophthalmological monitoring is particularly useful, without neglecting the condition of the ears, often sensitive in dogs with drooping ears.

Prevention and things to watch for

Nutrition

Feeding your pet well

The Black and Tan Coonhound needs a complete, balanced diet that is sufficiently rich in quality proteins to support its physical activity. The ration must be adapted to its age, its weight, its level of exercise and its body condition.
