The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound descends from the ancient brachets and was developed from selections derived from the Hanoverian Scent Hound. At the end of the 19th century, lighter subjects were selected in Bavaria to create a dog capable of working with ease on mountainous terrain. The modern breed was then structured in Germany, with the founding of the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound Club in Munich in 1912.

The Bavarian Mountain Hound is a medium-sized scenthound, robust, muscular and harmoniously built, while retaining an impression of suppleness and lightness. Its body fits slightly into a rectangle, with a topline a little rising towards the rear. It carries an elongated head, fairly broad pendant ears, attentive eyes and a medium-length tail. Its coat is short, dense and lying close, most often fawn in different shades, sometimes darker on the muzzle and ears.

The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound has a calm, self-assured and balanced temperament. Very attached to its owner, it is docile and close to its family, while remaining reserved towards strangers. A working dog above all, it has retained a strong hunting instinct and great concentration when it follows a trail.

Even if it can be calm at home, the Bavarian Mountain Hound must be able to exercise and explore, ideally in natural areas.
