Diet

Feeding your Whippet well

The Whippet needs good-quality food, adapted to its size, its age and its activity level. Its athletic profile requires a well-balanced ration to support its muscle mass without promoting weight gain.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.

  • Adult : Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.

  • Senior : Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

High-quality complete kibble generally suits the Whippet very well. It should provide digestible proteins, energy adapted to its activity and good nutritional density, with adjustment depending on whether it is a rather sporty dog or more of a homebody.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The quantity must be adjusted individually according to weight, age, neutering and exercise intensity. In the Whippet, it is preferable to base it on the actual body condition rather than overfeeding a naturally slender dog.

WeightDaily amountMeals/day
12 - 12 kg224 - 307 g2
12 - 13 kg230 - 315 g2
13 - 13 kg235 - 322 g2

Change

Managing the food transition

Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days to limit digestive upsets. The old food is reduced little by little while the new one increases, monitoring appetite, stools and overall tolerance.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Hydration is particularly important after running, in hot weather and during periods of sustained activity.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats can be useful for training, provided they remain occasional and are properly accounted for in the daily ration. Small, easily digestible rewards are preferable to avoid excess calories.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
  • Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
  • Deduct training treats from the daily ration.

Never give

As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, alcohol, cooked bones, xylitol and certain very fatty or very salty foods, as they can cause serious digestive disorders, poisoning or metabolic complications.
