Premium complete kibble for large active dogs generally suits the Poitevin well, with good digestibility and a protein intake adapted to its activity. During periods of sustained exertion, the energy density can be readjusted with the veterinarian's advice.

How much should you give?
The daily quantity must be set according to actual weight, the intensity of activity and the energy density of the chosen food. It is preferable to split the ration to facilitate digestion, especially in a sporting dog.

Managing the food transition
Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to avoid digestive disorders. The old food is reduced little by little while the new one is introduced in stages.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. In an active dog like the Poitevin, hydration is particularly important before, during and after long outings or sustained exertion.

Treats, in moderation
Treats should remain simple, digestible and given in moderation. They are useful for educational work, but their contribution must be included in the daily ration to avoid excesses.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Split the daily ration into at least two meals.
- Avoid intense exertion just before and just after meals.
- Adjust the ration to hunting periods or times of high activity.
Never give
As with all dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, avocado, alcohol, caffeine, cooked bones and sweeteners such as xylitol, as they can cause serious digestive, neurological or toxic disorders.
