Ariégeois: temperament, price, health, and breeders

Originally from Ariège, the Ariégeois was born between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century from the crossing of a local briquet hound with a pack hound, probably the Bleu de Gascogne. Count Élie de Vézins is generally considered the main architect of its development. Selected to excel in hare hunting on difficult terrain, in forest as well as in the mountains, the breed can also work on wild boar. Mainly present in the South of France, it remains rare elsewhere and almost disappeared during World War II. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale definitively recognized it on 1 October 1954 under number 20.

The Ariégeois is an elegant and light scenthound, with a well-muscled body. Its head, of medium width, has a slightly domed skull, a little-marked stop, a black nose and fine lips. Its brown and well-opened eyes express alertness. Its long, fine, supple and drooping ears reach the base of the nose. The back is muscled, the loin solid and slightly arched, the chest long and of medium width. The fine tail reaches the point of the hock and is carried gaily in a saber blade. The coat is short, close and fine. The coat color is white with well-defined black patches, sometimes speckled, with pale tan markings on the cheeks and above the eyes.

Cheerful, sociable, gentle and faithful, the Ariégeois is attached to its family and readily seeks its company. Intelligent, obedient and sensitive, it likes to please its owner. When hunting, it stands out for its speed, its scenting ability, its endurance, its diligence and its sense of initiative. Patient with children and generally sociable with other dogs, it can become anxious if its environment or its upbringing are too abrupt.

Active and hard-working, the Ariégeois needs long daily outings and regular opportunities to run in secure areas. Once sufficiently exercised, it knows how to remain calm at home. The countryside and wide open spaces suit it clearly better than life in an apartment. A lack of activity and olfactory stimulation can cause boredom and discomfort. Its hunting instinct requires particular vigilance during walks and serious training in recall.

The Ariégeois is docile, intelligent and endowed with good learning abilities. Its training must begin early and combine gentleness, consistency and measured firmness, because its sensitivity does not tolerate harsh methods well. Early socialization with humans, dogs and different environments helps prevent shyness. Recall, leash walking and managing chasing must be worked on consistently, ideally by means of positive reinforcement.

The price of an Ariégeois varies depending on the reputation of the kennel, the quality of the bloodline, registration with the LOF, health guarantees and the dog's intended purpose, notably companionship, hunting or breeding.

The Ariégeois is considered a generally robust dog and the breed is not known for any particular hereditary disease. However, its long, drooping ears promote the accumulation of moisture and debris, which increases the risk of otitis. Regular monitoring, combined with the usual preventive care, helps to preserve its health.

The Ariégeois needs a complete, balanced and sufficiently energy-rich diet to support its level of activity. The ration must vary according to its age, its weight, its body condition, its health and the intensity of its work.

The name of the breed directly recalls its Ariège cradle. Designed above all for hare hunting, this scenthound is also appreciated for wild boar and on rugged forest or mountain terrain. Despite its definitive recognition by the FCI in 1954, it remains mainly known in the south of France and remains rare outside its country of origin.
