Diet

Feeding your Russian Shepherd Dog well

Russia

Powerful and active dog, the Berger de Russie needs a rich, balanced diet adapted to its size, age and level of exercise. Protein quality and control of energy intake are particularly important during growth.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Choose a formula for a very large breed and control the growth rate in order to protect the joints.

  • Adult : Split the ration into two meals and adjust it to the activity level as well as to the body condition.

  • Senior : Adapt the energy density and support mobility on veterinary advice while maintaining quality proteins.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

High-quality complete kibble formulated for large or very large dogs is suitable, provided it is adapted to the life stage and activity. A home-prepared ration can be considered only with a formulation established by a veterinary nutritionist.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The ration must be weighed and adjusted according to actual weight, body condition, activity and the energy density of the food. The indicative quantity must always be compared with the manufacturer's recommendations and with changes in the silhouette.

Change

Managing the food transition

Any change in diet must be carried out gradually over seven to ten days by increasing the proportion of the new food, in order to limit digestive disorders.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times, with increased vigilance after exertion and in hot weather.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be deducted from the daily ration. Low-calorie, small-sized rewards make training easier without promoting weight gain.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh each portion rather than estimating it by eye.
  • Split the daily food into two meals.
  • Avoid intense exercise just before and after meals.
  • Monitor the silhouette and adjust the quantities each month.

Never give

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic, leek, alcohol, xylitol, caffeine, macadamia nuts and cooked bones should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders, kidney damage or obstructions.
