A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Choose a formula for large-breed puppies and control the growth rate without non-prescribed mineral supplementation.
Adult : Adjust the energy density to the actual work and split the ration into two meals.
Senior : Reduce calories if activity decreases while preserving quality proteins and joint comfort.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
High-quality kibble formulated for large or very large dogs is well suited, provided that its energy density and mineral balance are adapted to the life stage. A home-prepared ration is only conceivable with a veterinary formulation.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount depends on the energy density of the food, the weight, the activity, the physiological status and the season. The manufacturer's indications serve as a starting point, then the ration is adjusted according to body condition with the help of the veterinarian.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 40 - 50 kg | 450 - 600 g | 2 |
| 50 - 60 kg | 550 - 700 g | 2 |
| 60 - 65 kg | 650 - 800 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change in diet must be gradual over about a week, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food in order to limit digestive upsets.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, particularly after exercise and in hot weather. An abnormally high or low intake must be reported to the veterinarian.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats should remain occasional and be deducted from the daily ration. For training, favor small low-calorie pieces rather than large portions.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the daily ration rather than serving it free-choice.
- Split the food into two meals.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after meals.
- Check weight and body shape every month.
- Adjust quantities to the season and activity level.
Never give
Avoid in particular chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic in toxic quantities, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods, which can cause poisoning, obstruction or severe digestive disorders.
