A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Choose a complete food for the growth of medium-sized dogs, divided into three meals then into two, without accelerating weight gain.
Adult : Adjust the ration to the actual activity and maintain two daily meals in order to better control appetite.
Senior : Reduce the energy intake if activity decreases while preserving quality proteins and monitoring muscle mass.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Complete, good-quality kibble for a medium-sized, active dog is suitable, provided it supplies digestible animal proteins and an appropriate balance of fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals. A home-prepared ration may be offered only if it is formulated by a veterinary nutritionist.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily ration must be calculated according to the energy density of the food, the ideal weight and the intensity of activities. The manufacturer's indications constitute a starting point to be adjusted according to changes in body condition, with the veterinarian's advice.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 15 - 18 kg | 210 - 270 g | 2 |
| 19 - 21 kg | 250 - 310 g | 2 |
| 22 - 24 kg | 280 - 350 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change of food must be gradual over about seven to ten days, by gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. This transition reduces the risk of digestive disorders and makes it possible to observe the dog's tolerance.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Needs increase after exercise, in hot weather and with a dry diet. During prolonged outings, you must plan for water and offer regular breaks.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats should remain occasional, small in size and counted in the daily energy intake. Low-calorie rewards or part of the usual ration are preferable for training a dog prone to being overweight.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh each portion rather than measuring it by eye.
- Deduct treats from the daily intake.
- Give the food in two meals per day.
- Check the silhouette and weight once a month.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
Never give
Chocolate, fresh or dried grapes, onion, garlic in quantity, leek, avocado, macadamia nuts, alcohol, caffeine and any product containing xylitol are to be avoided, as they can cause severe poisoning. Cooked bones, very fatty foods and heavily salted or spicy leftovers also present digestive or traumatic risks.
