Origins
Where does it come from?
The Gończy Polski, or Polish scenthound, is a hunting dog developed in the forests of Poland to pursue game by voice. Lighter and more lively than the Polish Hound, it was distinguished as a breed in its own right in the 20th century. It remains mainly a hunting dog in Poland, still rare in France. Its black and tan coat visually brings it closer to other scenthounds of Central Europe.
Appearance
What does it look like?
Medium-sized dog, rectangular, lean and muscular. The head is noble, the stop slightly marked, the ears set high and of medium length. The eyes are dark, the expression lively. The coat is short, close and dense. The coat is black and tan, sometimes chocolate and tan. The tail is of medium length, carried sabre.
Temperament
Temperament and personality
Passionate about hunting, attached to its pack and generally friendly with the family. It is more independent than a herding dog. Children are well accepted if they respect its rest. Small animals trigger the chasing instinct. It is not a guard dog, but it warns loudly.
Living together
Living with children and animals
He needs to run and to scent. A daily life that is too urban frustrates him. After the effort, he can live near the house. Vocalizations are part of his expression: a sensitive neighborhood is a bad choice.
Training
Training and socialization
Recall and voice control are the two main focuses. He learns, but the trail often comes before the instruction. Short sessions, sport tracking, and consistency give better results than dry repetition.
Budget

Rustic working dog, little burdened by publicized defects, but exposed to ear issues, parasites and forest trauma. A still limited base outside Poland invites checking the diversity of origins.
Prevention & watch pointsDiet
Feed it well
The Gończy Polski needs a complete, digestible diet adjusted to its age, its activity and its body condition. Protein quality and control of energy intake matter as much as the volume of the ration.
