Longevity
Life expectancy
With an adapted lifestyle, a quality diet and regular activity, the Norrbotten Spitz generally lives between 12 and 14 years. This longevity is honorable for a dog of this active size, provided that its physical condition is maintained and its locomotor health is monitored.
Constitution
Is this a robust breed?
This breed is known to be hardy, enduring and well prepared for cold climatic conditions. Its solid build and double coat give it good hardiness, even if this robustness does not exempt it from standard veterinary follow-up and maintenance suited to shedding periods.
Things to watch for
What to look out for
Health vigilance should mainly focus on the musculoskeletal system and, more rarely, on certain neurological disorders. Regular observation of gait, ease of jumping, and recovery after exertion helps to detect discomfort early.
Hip dysplasia: A malformation or laxity of the hip joint can promote pain, lameness and osteoarthritis in the more or less long term.
Elbow dysplasia: This orthopedic condition can cause locomotor discomfort of the forelimbs and warrants monitoring in case of stiffness or lameness.
Cerebellar ataxia: Rarer, this neurological condition can cause coordination disorders and requires a prompt veterinary evaluation.
Climate
Tolerance to cold and heat
The Norrbotten Spitz tolerates the cold well thanks to its dense undercoat and its Nordic origin. On the other hand, it is less comfortable during high heat and must then have shade, fresh water and outings during the mildest hours.
Weight
Prone to weight gain
Weight gain is not its main weak point, but a drop in activity or treats that are too frequent can throw its silhouette off balance. Simple monitoring of body condition and sufficient daily activity generally make it possible to keep it lean and muscular.
Everyday care
Good habits to keep your pet healthy
- Brush more often during the 2 annual shedding periods.
- Check ears, eyes and paw pads after outings in nature.
- Watch for any limping, stiffness or drop in energy after exertion.
- Ask for veterinary advice in case of coordination disorder.
Vaccination
Norrbottenspets vaccinations: schedule
Which vaccines does a Norrbottenspets need? Like all dogs, Norrbottenspetss should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Norrbottenspets vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.
| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |
Adult Norrbottenspets booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well
Adopting a healthy Norrbottenspets
Hip screening is relevant in breeding dogs and in dogs showing locomotor discomfort. Regular clinical examinations, supplemented if necessary by an orthopedic assessment, also help monitor the elbows and overall joint condition.
