The breed benefits from good overall robustness, but its skeleton and relatively short limbs must not be overstrained. Repeated jumping, frequent stairs and very uneven terrain can increase the strain on the back and joints.

What to look out for
Regular veterinary monitoring is recommended throughout life, with increased attention paid to gait, mobility, ears, eyes and changes in weight. Any pain, lameness or difficulty getting up warrants a prompt consultation.
Spinal issues: The length of the back can promote pain, deformities, or problems in the vertebrae, especially with age or in cases of overweight.
Hip dysplasia: An abnormality of the joint can lead to discomfort, lameness, and osteoarthritis, which justifies vigilance regarding mobility.
Limb fragility: Short limbs do not tolerate violent efforts and very rough terrain well.
Ear infections: Long, drooping ears retain moisture and require appropriate inspection as well as cleaning.
Overweight: The tendency to gain weight increases strain on the back and joints.
Climate
Tolerance to cold and heat
Its short coat gives it an average tolerance to both cold and heat. In cold or wet weather, outings should remain active and careful drying is useful. In hot periods, cooler hours should be preferred, shade provided and sustained efforts avoided.

The Basset Artésien-Normand is prone to being overweight. Its ration must be weighed and adjusted to its age, its activity and its body condition. Table scraps are not recommended and treats must be included in the daily energy intake.

Which vaccines does a Norman Artesian Basset need? Like all dogs, Norman Artesian Bassets should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Norman Artesian Basset vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.
