Lykoi: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The Lykoi is a recent breed born in the United States from a natural mutation that appeared in domestic cats, giving a sparse coat and a darker mask. Breeders fixed the type from the 2010s, sometimes crossing with house cats to keep diversity. The name comes from the Greek lykos, the wolf. In France, the breed remains rare and sought after for its unique appearance, not for a « wild » origin.

Medium-sized cat, rather slender, with a rounded wedge-shaped head, large ears and open eyes, often yellow or amber. The coat is short, partially missing around the eyes, muzzle and belly, which creates the “werewolf” effect. The most typical coat is black roaning, but other colors exist. The skin must remain healthy and without sores.

Lively, curious, sociable, more active than a Persian. He likes to take part in household life, play and sometimes retrieve. With children and other cats, he generally gets along well if he is socialized. He is not a free-roaming outdoor cat: his skin and coat protect him poorly.

Good apartment cat, provided you offer games, heights and contact. He can follow his human from room to room. Intense sun and cold bother him. Some individuals shed in patches, which is known in the breed and must remain without inflammation.

Intelligent and playful: clicker, search games and getting used to skin care. Litter training is learned easily. You must get it used early to skin checks and possible winter clothing.

A pet Lykoi often costs between 1 500 and 2 800 euros, sometimes more. Worldwide rarity explains most of the price. A very low price should prompt checking the origin.

The hair mutation can be accompanied by more exposed skin: sun, cold, irritations. It is necessary to distinguish a molt in a "werewolf cycle" from dermatitis. A breeding program that also works with non-mutated cats preserves diversity. The rest of the follow-up is that of an active indoor cat.

The Lykoi needs a complete, digestible diet adjusted to its age, its activity and its body condition. Protein quality and control of energy intake matter as much as the volume of the ration.

Despite the spectacular photos, the Lykoi has no wolf blood: it is a mutated domestic cat. Some lose even more hair periodically, then regain it. Rarity keeps prices high.
