Kurilian Bobtail: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The Kurilian Bobtail is a recent breed originating from Russia, more precisely from the Kuril Islands. Its short pompom tail is said to have appeared spontaneously and then been passed on genetically. The breed was developed and established from the middle of the 20th century before being recognized in Europe in 2003. It still remains little-known outside Russia, which contributes to its rarity.

The Kurilian Bobtail is a semi-cobby format cat, compact, muscular and powerful. Its back is slightly arched and its medium-length legs are sturdy. Its trapezoid head has prominent cheekbones, slightly slanted round eyes and medium-sized ears. Its most striking characteristic is its short tail, less than 8 cm, formed of irregular bends and resembling a pompom. The coat exists in a short-haired or semi-long-haired version, with a developed undercoat and a silky texture.

The Kurilian Bobtail is an affectionate, stable, curious and very sociable cat. It readily becomes attached to its family and is gentle with children. It combines great liveliness with a calm and composed temperament. Intelligent and receptive, it generally tolerates well the presence of other cats and even dogs when it is properly socialized.

On a daily basis, the Kurilian Bobtail likes to observe, explore and play. It is an excellent hunter, readily active, which particularly appreciates water and may even like to swim or paddle. It is not very aggressive and quite not very vocal. It copes poorly with an environment that is too confined and thrives more when it has space, stimulation and regular games.

The Kurilian Bobtail learns fairly easily thanks to its intelligence and curiosity. A gentle, consistent education based on positive reinforcement gives good results. It can learn a few simple commands or small tricks, but retains an independent side that requires patience and consistency. Early socialization helps strengthen its natural balance.

The Kurilian Bobtail is a rare breed, and its purchase price depends mainly on the quality of the lineage, the availability of kittens and the seriousness of the breeding. Its still limited distribution can make the supply vary significantly depending on the countries and the periods.

The Kurilian Bobtail is considered a very robust breed. No major fragility is commonly highlighted in general references, but it remains necessary to maintain regular veterinary follow-up, up-to-date vaccination and good hygiene of life.

The Kurilian Bobtail can be fed with good-quality commercial food, in kibble, in wet food or in a well-balanced mixed diet. Its diet must take into account its activity, its age and its ideal weight.
