A menu for every age
Their needs change as they grow
Puppy: Provide a small-breed puppy food in three to four meals, then gradually reduce the frequency.
Adult: Serve a weighed ration in two meals and adjust it to activity, sterilization and body shape.
Senior: Choose a digestible food suited to age and monitor weight, teeth and kidney function particularly closely.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?
Complete kibble for small-breed dogs, adapted to its age, activity level and physiological status, is a practical solution. Wet or home-prepared food can also be suitable if it is balanced and formulated with the help of a veterinarian.
Portion sizes
How much should you feed?
The daily amount depends on the energy density of the food, weight, age, sterilization and activity. You must follow the manufacturer's guide, weigh the ration and adjust it according to changes in body shape.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
|---|---|---|
| 3 kg | 60 - 80 g | 2 |
| 4 kg | 75 - 100 g | 2 |
Changing food
How to switch foods successfully
Any change in diet must be gradual over about a week, increasing each day the proportion of the new food in order to limit digestive upsets.
Hydration
Don't overlook water
Clean, fresh water must remain accessible at all times. The bowl must be washed daily and consumption monitored, especially during hot periods or when fed an exclusively dry diet.
A little extra
Treats in moderation
Treats should remain occasional, small in size and integrated into the daily caloric intake. Part of the ration can be used as a reward during training sessions.
Good habits
Make mealtimes count
- Weigh each portion with a kitchen scale.
- Deduct treats from the daily intake.
- Avoid intense exercise right after the meal.
- Check weight and body shape each month.
Never feed these foods
Chocolate, fresh or dried grapes, onion, garlic, leek, avocado, macadamia nuts, alcohol, caffeine, xylitol, cooked bones and very fatty or salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders or serious injuries.
