A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Kitten : A highly digestible diet, rich in protein and divided into several small meals helps support growth and muscle development.
Adult : A complete and measured ration, adapted to its actual activity, helps preserve its slender silhouette, muscle mass and the quality of its coat.
Senior : With age, a diet that is easier to digest and regular veterinary monitoring make it possible to adjust the ration according to appetite, weight and overall condition.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Kibble or premium wet food for cats, formulated with a high proportion of animal proteins, are well suited to this breed. A moderate fiber content can also help limit the effects of hairballs during shedding. The specific choice should always be adjusted with the veterinarian according to age, activity and body condition.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount must be adapted to weight, age, activity level and possible neutering. The important thing is to aim for a measured, stable ration consistent with its slender but muscular build, without overfeeding a less active cat or one living mostly indoors.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 2 - 3 kg | 40 - 60 g | 2 |
| 3 - 4 kg | 52 - 76 g | 2 |
| 4 - 5 kg | 64 - 92 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change in diet must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. Gradually mixing the old and the new food allows the cat to adapt more comfortably to the new ration.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
The Turkish Angora must always have access to fresh, clean water that is renewed regularly. Good hydration is essential, especially if its diet is largely based on kibble. Increasing the number of water points can encourage drinking.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats should remain occasional and be included in the overall ration. They can be useful for play, training or the relationship with the cat, but in excess they promote weight gain and unbalance the diet.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Favor a diet rich in quality animal proteins.
- Adjust the ration to the activity level and to any possible sterilization.
- Slightly increase vigilance regarding hairballs during the shedding period.
- Always leave fresh, clean water available.
Never give
As with other cats, you should avoid in particular chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, alcohol, coffee, cooked bones and very fatty or salty foods, as they can cause digestive, neurological, blood or kidney disorders that are sometimes serious.
