A menu for every age
Their needs change as they grow
Puppy: Choose a food for small-breed puppies, divided into three to four meals depending on age, in order to support steady growth.
Adult: Serve a measured ration in two meals and adjust it to activity and body condition.
Senior: Favor a digestible formula whose energy intake and nutrients are adapted to mobility and the veterinary assessment.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?
Complete, quality kibble formulated for small dogs is generally suitable, with bites adapted to its jaw. A home-prepared ration can be offered if it is formulated and balanced by a veterinarian.
Portion sizes
How much should you feed?
The daily amount depends on the energy density of the food and the dog's individual profile. You should follow the manufacturer's instructions as a starting point, then adjust according to body condition with the help of the veterinarian.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
|---|---|---|
| 4 kg | 70 - 90 g | 2 |
| 5 kg | 85 - 105 g | 2 |
| 6 kg | 95 - 120 g | 2 |
Changing food
How to switch foods successfully
Any change in diet must be gradual over about a week, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food in order to limit digestive upsets.
Hydration
Don't overlook water
Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times, especially after activity and during hot periods. The bowl must be washed regularly.
A little extra
Treats in moderation
Treats should remain occasional, small in size and represent a small part of daily intake. They can be reserved for training and deducted from the ration.
Good habits
Make mealtimes count
- Weigh the daily ration with a kitchen scale.
- Deduct treats from the main ration.
- Regularly monitor the silhouette and weight.
- Avoid intense exercise right after the meal.
Never feed these foods
Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic, leek, alcohol, caffeine, xylitol, macadamia nuts and cooked bones are dangerous for dogs and can cause poisoning, digestive lesions or an obstruction requiring urgent veterinary care.
