Origins

Where does it come from?

The Petit Brabançon belongs to the family of the Small Belgian Dogs, alongside the Brussels Griffon and the Belgian Griffon. Like its two cousins, it descends from the Smousje, a small dog from the Brussels region formerly used to guard carriages and hunt vermin in stables. Contributions from small-sized breeds, notably the Pug and the King Charles Spaniel, helped to establish its type. The breed was definitively recognized by the FCI on 26 October 1954.

Appearance

What does it look like?

The Petit Brabançon is a small, sturdy, elegant dog, almost square in its proportions. Its head is broad and round, with a domed forehead, a very pronounced stop, large round dark brown eyes and a short muzzle. Its coat is short, harsh, lying close to the body and with a glossy appearance. The coat color is red, reddish or black and tan, often accompanied by a dark mask.

Temperament

Temperament and personality

The Petit Brabançon is a curious, playful, alert and rather self-confident dog. Very attached to its owner, it copes poorly with solitude and seeks real closeness on a daily basis. Its lively expression is accompanied by a sensitive temperament, sometimes a little reckless, notably when faced with dogs larger than itself.

Affectionate Intelligent

Living together

Living with children and other pets

The Petit Brabançon adapts well to different lifestyles provided it stays close to its family. It can live in the city and in an apartment without difficulty, while also appreciating access to a garden. It is not a great athlete, but it needs a daily walk and regular interactions to remain balanced.

Training

Training and socialization

His training must be early, consistent and firm without brutality. Intelligent and observant, the Petit Brabançon knows how to take advantage of his endearing side if the rules are not set clearly. Good socialization, a stable framework and short but regular learning sessions generally give very good results.

Budget

Price and budget for the Petit Brabançon

The price of a Petit Brabançon varies depending on the lineage, the seriousness of the breeding, the screenings and the socialization. The maintenance budget (food, veterinary care, training) often exceeds the purchase price over time.
