Diet

Feeding your Sloughi well

Morocco

The Sloughi needs a balanced and highly digestible diet, adapted to its age, its size and above all to its level of activity. As it is a sporty and lean dog, the quality of protein and energy intake matters more than a simply large ration.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : The Sloughi puppy needs a highly digestible growth diet, split into several meals, to support its development without excessive growth rate.

  • Adult : In adulthood, a complete formula adapted to the activity level helps maintain a lean silhouette, good musculature and proper recovery after exertion.

  • Senior : For the senior, the ration must remain of quality while taking into account a possible decrease in activity, in order to limit muscle loss and weight gain.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

A complete, good-quality diet, formulated for an active adult dog of medium to large size, generally suits the Sloughi well. A home-prepared ration can also be considered if it is balanced with the help of a professional, because this dog must maintain proper muscle mass without excess weight.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount must be adjusted to body condition, the intensity of outings and the dog's age. With the Sloughi, it is better to think in terms of body condition and actual expenditure than in terms of a fixed amount identical all year round.

WeightDaily amountMeals/day

Change

Managing the food transition

Any dietary transition must be carried out gradually over several days, ideally over about a week, in order to limit digestive upsets. The gradual introduction of the new food also makes it possible to check that it is well tolerated in a sensitive dog.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Hydration deserves particular attention after exercise, in hot weather and when traveling, without encouraging too large a water intake just before intense exertion.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats can be useful in the Sloughi’s training if they remain simple, digestible and given in moderation. They must be included in the total daily ration to avoid an excessive energy intake.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Split the ration into 2 meals per day.
  • Avoid intense exercise in the hour before and after the meal.
  • Adjust the ration according to actual activity and body condition.
  • Weigh the dog regularly to spot any variation.

Never give

As with all dogs, chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic, avocado, xylitol, alcohol, yeast dough and cooked bones should be avoided, as these foods can cause severe digestive disorders, poisoning or mechanical complications.
