Majorca Shepherd Dog: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The precise origins of the Chien de berger de Majorque remain poorly documented, but its ancestors are said to have been brought to the Balearic Islands by merchants. On the island of Majorca, the breed was then selected to guard flocks, protect property and assist rural work, with a probable influence from other local herding dogs and the Dogue de Majorque.

The Majorca Shepherd Dog is a large rustic dog, strong and well proportioned, with well-developed musculature without losing agility. Its silhouette is solid, with a massive neck, a broad chest, a straight topline and a harmonious head with a slightly convex profile. Its coat is black, most often solid, sometimes with a little white on the chest, under the neck or on the feet. It exists in a short-haired variety, the most widespread, and in a long-haired variety.

Very loyal to its owner, the Majorcan Shepherd Dog is affectionate, sensitive and docile with its own. It remains, on the other hand, wary of strangers, which makes it a good guard dog. Courageous and intelligent, it combines the qualities of a family companion with a true working-dog temperament.

It is an active dog that needs a dynamic pace of life and long, regular outings. It particularly appreciates wide open spaces and thrives more easily in the countryside or in a house with well-fenced land. In the city, its balance depends on sufficient daily physical exercise and a stable environment.

The Chien de berger de Majorque is generally considered a hardy and robust dog. The breed does not present a long list of widely reported predispositions, but its large-dog morphology requires particular vigilance regarding the joints and the risk of gastric torsion.

This dog needs a complete, balanced, good-quality diet, adapted to its age, size and activity level. A well-calibrated ration helps it maintain its muscle mass, endurance and a stable weight.

It is traditionally associated with pastoral work in the Balearic Islands and is distinguished by its characteristic black coat. Two coat varieties are recognized, short-haired and long-haired.
