A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Choose a food for large-breed puppies, split meals and control growth in order to protect the joints.
Adult : Adjust intake to daily activity and maintain an athletic silhouette without excess weight.
Senior : Favor an easily digestible diet, adjusted to the decrease in activity and supporting the joints according to the veterinarian's advice.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
High-quality complete kibble formulated for large-breed dogs and adapted to the activity level is a practical solution. A home-prepared ration based on meat, vegetables and a source of carbohydrates may be suitable if it is balanced by a veterinary nutritionist in order to avoid deficiencies.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount must be calculated based on the energy density of the food, the ideal weight and the actual expenditure. The manufacturer's indications serve as a starting point, then the ration is adjusted according to changes in weight and body shape.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 26 - 30 kg | 300 - 380 g | 2 |
| 31 - 34 kg | 340 - 420 g | 2 |
| 35 - 38 kg | 380 - 460 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change in diet must be gradual over seven to ten days, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. This transition limits digestive upsets and makes it possible to observe the dog's tolerance.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, particularly after exercise and in hot weather. When travelling or during long outings, regular breaks should be planned for drinking.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats should remain occasional and represent less than 10% of the daily energy intake. For training, very small pieces taken from the ration or low-calorie rewards are preferable.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the daily ration rather than estimating it by eye.
- Divide the adult ration into two meals.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after meals.
- Adjust quantities according to body condition and activity.
- Include treats in the daily energy intake.
Never give
Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic in large quantities, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts and cooked bones are to be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders, neurological damage or internal lesions.
