A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Choose a complete food for growth, divided into three meals then gradually into two, without excess energy.
Active adult : Adjust the calorie intake to the actual work, with a more energy-dense ration during periods of sustained hunting.
Adult at rest : Reduce portions when activity decreases in order to avoid weight gain.
Senior : Favor an easily digestible formula, maintain quality proteins and adjust calories to mobility.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
High-quality kibble formulated for an active adult dog is a practical solution. A home-prepared ration based on suitable ingredients may also be appropriate, but it must be calculated with a veterinarian in order to ensure balance in proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily quantity must be determined based on the energy density of the food and the dog's actual expenditure. It is preferably divided into two meals, avoiding intense exercise just before and after food intake.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 28 - 30 kg | 340 - 430 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change in diet must be gradual over about a week, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food in order to limit digestive upsets.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. During long outings, hunting or in hot weather, small regular drinks should be offered and signs of dehydration monitored.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats can support training, but they must remain low in calories and be deducted from the daily ration in order to preserve ideal weight.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the ration regularly rather than estimating it by eye.
- Split the daily food into two meals.
- Avoid intense exertion just before and after the meal.
- Check the weight and body condition every month.
Never give
Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic in quantity, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts and cooked bones must be kept out of reach, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders, internal injuries or neurological damage.
