A puppy and kitten fair is a sales exhibition where breeders present their puppies and kittens to the public over a weekend, usually at an exhibition center, racetrack, or convention center. You can meet dozens of dog and cat breeds in one place and talk to breeders. You may even be able to take a pet home, provided it's old enough under the law and has the required health records. A vet checks the animals before the fair opens, and visitors' pets aren't allowed.
Fairs are organized by specialist operators who travel from city to city throughout the year, as well as by a few major pet shows with breeder areas. Each fair is listed above with its official website, where you can find opening hours, tickets, and the list of confirmed exhibitors.
A fair is still a quick sale: take the time to check the breeding facility, its code of ethics, and the animals' living conditions, and don't hesitate to follow up with the breeder after the fair. You can also plan your visit by finding breeders listed on Pedibase near the fair's city.
Check health and age
A puppy or kitten can't be transferred before eight weeks of age. Ask for the health record, the date of the first vaccinations, and the veterinary certificate provided at the time of sale.
Ask for the paperwork
Microchip identification, breeder registration number, sales contract, and, for an animal registered in a studbook, a birth certificate or pedigree: you should receive all documents on the day.
Ask the breeder questions
Where do the parents live? How many litters are born each year? What health tests are done for the breed? A passionate breeder will be happy to answer and invite you to visit the breeding facility.
Avoid impulse purchases
Choose a breed and set a budget before you go, compare several breeders, and don't be afraid to leave without a puppy. A good breeder will give you time to think.
