Origins

Where does it come from?

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is an ancient British breed developed in Wales, probably from local hunting spaniels and then from historical crosses with other British spaniels. Used as a game-flushing dog and hunting assistant, it established itself through its speed, endurance and scenting ability on varied terrain. Its first standard was established by the Kennel Club in 1902 and the breed was definitively recognized by the FCI in 1954.

Appearance

What does it look like?

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized dog, compact, harmonious and muscular, without heaviness. Its silhouette is made to cover ground with fluid and powerful gaits. Its head is rather long, its ears are drooping, and its red and white coat is typical of the breed. The coat is medium-length, silky, dense, straight or flat, with fringes on the limbs, the ears and the tail.

Temperament

Temperament and personality

Lively, cheerful and affectionate, the Welsh Springer Spaniel is very attached to its family and pleasant to live with when it expends enough of its energy. It is gentle with children, sociable without being outgoing with everyone, and not very inclined to guarding. Its hunting instinct, on the other hand, remains very present, which influences its behavior on walks and its need for stimulating activities.

Affectionate Playful Sociable

Living together

Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, it is an active dog that enjoys long outings, shared games and natural environments. It copes poorly with prolonged inactivity and thrives more in a house with a garden or in a home able to offer it real physical and mental exercise. Indoors, it can be calm after exertion, but it is not the most suited to an exclusively sedentary life in an apartment.

Training

Training and socialization

His training requires consistency, good recall work early on and positive methods. Like many hunting dogs, he progresses better with a consistent framework, short and motivating exercises, and well-measured rewards. Brutality must be avoided, while early work on walking, recall and self-control helps a lot to channel his liveliness.

Budget

Price and budget for the Welsh Springer Spaniel

The purchase price of the Welsh Springer Spaniel depends mainly on the seriousness of the breeding, the quality of the lineage and the health monitoring offered. A relatively confidential breed, it often requires giving priority to specialized breeders able to document the health and temperament of the breeding dogs.

Health

Health at a glance

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is overall a solid and hardy dog, but the breed has several known points of vigilance in orthopedics, ophthalmology and endocrinology. Serious veterinary follow-up, tested breeding dogs and good ear hygiene help to limit the main risks.

Prevention and things to watch for

Nutrition

Feeding your pet well

The Welsh Springer Spaniel needs a complete, good-quality diet, adjusted to its age, size and above all to its activity level. As it is a dynamic dog, the ration must support effort without promoting weight gain.

Fun facts and popularity

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is sometimes called the Welsh Springer. It stands out from other spaniels by its exclusively red and white coat and by its narrow ears often compared to vine leaves. Less widespread than the English Springer, it retains a true reputation as a hardy dog, close to its owner and effective in the field.
