Toyger: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The Toyger is a very recent feline breed, developed in the United States in the early 1980s by Judy Sugden, daughter of Jean Mill, creator of the Bengal. The objective was to create a domestic cat evoking the appearance of a miniature tiger thanks to selective breeding work around the Bengal and domestic cats with a distinctly marked tabby coat. In France, the breed remains rare and still not very widespread, even if its official recognition has become more structured in recent years.

The Toyger has a robust, muscular and harmonious body, with an athletic silhouette that recalls that of a small tiger. Its head is broad and fairly long, its ears are round and medium-sized, slightly tilted forward, and its eyes are large, round and expressive. Its coat is short, soft and shiny. The standard particularly highlights the brown mackerel tabby coat, with sharp contrasts between the background color and the darker markings.

The Toyger is an intelligent, sociable and affectionate cat, who readily seeks human company. It is gentle with its family, enjoys petting and generally gets along very well with children as well as with other animals. Its open nature also makes it rather comfortable with visitors, which makes it a pleasant companion and easy to integrate into a lively household.

Lively and playful, the Toyger needs daily activity to stay balanced. He likes to climb, explore and take part in household life. Even if he can be calm during his rest periods, he requires an enriched environment with games, observation posts and ideally a cat tree. He also tends to vocalize more than average.

The Toyger generally learns well when offered gentle, consistent and stimulating training. Curious and close to humans, it can pick up lifestyle habits, simple rules and even a few small playful exercises. Short sessions, rewards and regularity give very good results with this breed.

The Toyger remains a rare breed, which strongly influences its purchase price. The price mainly depends on the quality of the lineage, compliance with the standard, the seriousness of the breeding, and the level of socialization of the kitten.

The Toyger is generally considered a robust cat, but its status as a recent breed calls for caution regarding the available health hindsight. No major set of genetic diseases is clearly established to date, without this exempting it from serious veterinary monitoring throughout its life.
