Origins

Where does it come from?

The Spinone descends from ancient wire-haired hunting dogs present in Italy for centuries. Dogs close to the breed already appear in medieval depictions, then in works of the Italian Renaissance, notably in Mantua. Selected to work on difficult terrain, it established itself as an enduring, versatile and reliable pointing dog.

Appearance

What does it look like?

The Spinone is a medium to large-sized dog, solid, well-proportioned and muscular. Its oval head, its large drooping ears, its expressive eyes and above all its pronounced eyebrows, its moustache and its beard give it a gentle and rustic expression. Its coat is straight, harsh and dense, without undercoat, with a coat most often white, white and orange or white speckled with chestnut.

Temperament

Temperament and personality

The Spinone is sociable, friendly, patient and deeply attached to its family. It is docile, loyal and affectionate, including with children when it is well socialized. A hunter at heart, it retains a strong chasing instinct, but its underlying temperament remains peaceful and it is not known for aggressiveness.

Affectionate Playful Intelligent Easy to train Sociable

Living together

Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, the Spinone is willing, steady and pleasant to live with if its activity needs are met. It likes to walk for a long time, explore, use its nose and share the life of its owners. Without being hyperactive, it copes poorly with prolonged inactivity and can quickly get bored in an environment that is too lacking in outings and stimulation.

Training

Training and socialization

The Spinone responds well to positive, consistent and regular training. Its recall, early socialization and control of its urges to chase deserve particular attention. It is not a complicated dog to train, but it gives the best of itself with a patient, steady owner who is able to channel its hunting abilities without brutality.

Its name is often associated with a type of thorny vegetation in which it was able to move thanks to its endurance and its protective coat. It is also appreciated for its excellent relationship with cold water and its versatility on varied terrain.
