A menu for every age
Their needs change as they grow
Puppy: Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
Adult: Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.
Senior: Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?
A diet rich in quality animal proteins and correctly balanced in energy suits this small active terrier well. Dogs fed a home-prepared ration must benefit from a validated formulation in order to avoid nutritional imbalances.
Portion sizes
How much should you feed?
The daily amount depends on weight, activity and the type of food chosen. It is preferable to base it on the manufacturer’s or veterinarian’s recommendations, then adjust according to the dog’s body condition.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
|---|---|---|
| 8 kg | 140 - 175 g | 2 |
| 8 - 9 kg | 155 - 190 g | 2 |
Changing food
How to switch foods successfully
Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. Introducing the new food in stages makes it possible to observe tolerance and adjust if necessary.
Hydration
Don't overlook water
The Sealyham Terrier must always have access to clean, fresh water. This vigilance is particularly important in hot weather, after exercise and when fed a dry diet.
A little extra
Treats in moderation
Treats should remain occasional and integrated into the overall energy intake of the day. They are useful for training, but excess promotes overweight in this small, greedy and strong-willed dog.
Good habits
Make mealtimes count
- Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
- Deduct training treats from the daily ration.
Never feed these foods
As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, avocado, alcohol, xylitol, cooked bones and very fatty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or metabolic damage.
