Health

The Kelpie's health

Australia

The Kelpie is overall a hardy, robust and resilient dog. Its double coat helps it cope with climatic variations and the breed is not particularly known for accumulating numerous health frailties when the dogs come from serious lines and are well cared for.

Longevity

Life expectancy

With a life expectancy of around 10 to 14 years, the Kelpie can accompany an active family or a committed handler for a long time. This longevity depends on good lifestyle habits, a stable weight, appropriate exercise and regular veterinary follow-up.

Constitution

Is this a robust breed?

The Kelpie is one of the dog breeds known to be sturdy, hardy and able to work in difficult conditions. This natural robustness does not eliminate the need for careful monitoring, especially in very active dogs or those involved in sporting or working activities.

Things to watch for

What to look out for

Even if no major predisposition is particularly highlighted for the breed, it remains important to choose a reputable breeder, to monitor growth carefully and to keep an eye on locomotor condition, physical condition and recovery after exertion.

  • Hip dysplasia: Like many dogs, the Kelpie may have a joint malformation that promotes pain and osteoarthritis, especially in cases of overweight.

  • Eye conditions: An ophthalmological examination of breeding dogs and monitoring tearing or vision remain useful.

  • Otitis and skin allergies: Itching, redness or dirty ears must be checked, especially if the dog works in cover.

Climate

Tolerance to cold and heat

The Kelpie tolerates cold as well as heat thanks to its hardiness and its double coat, provided it has fresh water, shade and an activity adapted to extreme temperatures. In hot weather, intense efforts should be favored during the coolest hours.

Weight

Prone to weight gain

The Kelpie is naturally active and rather lean, but a lack of exercise or poorly adjusted rations can upset its condition. Its weight must be monitored according to its actual level of activity, especially in companion dogs that are less exercised than working dogs.

Everyday care

Good habits to keep your pet healthy

  • Maintain annual veterinary follow-up and keep the preventive schedule up to date.
  • Monitor the condition of the paw pads, ears, and recovery after exertion.
  • Adjust activity and hydration in case of high heat.

Vaccination

Kelpie vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Kelpie need? Like all dogs, Kelpies should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Kelpie vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

Adult Kelpie booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

Adopting a healthy Kelpie

An annual veterinary check-up, updating vaccinations, monitoring the teeth, ears and locomotor condition constitute a good basis for keeping this breed in shape. In dogs intended for sport or work, regular monitoring of physical condition and recovery is particularly useful.
