Origins

Where does it come from?

The development of the Jagd Terrier began in Germany shortly after the First World War, when hunters wanted to create a terrier entirely focused on hunting, with obedience, versatility, tenacity and an aptitude for working in varied environments, including water. The selection was notably based on black and tan Fox Terriers, then on contributions from the Old English Wirehaired Terrier and the Welsh Terrier. The breed was then definitively recognized by the FCI in 1954.

Appearance

What does it look like?

The Jagd Terrier is a small dog of compact and well-proportioned build, very slightly longer than it is tall at the withers. Its body is solid, the back straight and muscular, the chest deep and the gait ample and free. The head is rather elongated, the muzzle strong, the eyes dark with a determined expression and the V-shaped ears set high. The coat is black, dark brown or grizzled black with well-defined tan markings.

Temperament

Temperament and personality

The Jagd Terrier is a courageous, hardy dog, full of vitality and temperament. Very committed to work, it proves reliable, sociable and generally neither shy nor aggressive. Its hunting instinct remains pronounced, which strongly influences its day-to-day behavior.

Playful

Living together

Living with children and other pets

The Jagd Terrier needs a lot of activity and tolerates prolonged inactivity poorly. It can live just as well in the city as in the countryside if it benefits from long outings, games and regular stimulation. Its energy, its enthusiasm and its chasing instinct require a consistent and active framework.

Training

Training and socialization

The Jagd Terrier likes to work and to please its owner. Its training must be carried out consistently, without brutality or laxness, favoring encouragement and reward. Well guided, it quickly learns the expected behaviors and responds well to a clear framework.

Budget

Price and budget for the Jagdterrier

The Jagd Terrier generally remains more affordable than certain highly sought-after companion breeds, but the price varies depending on the quality of the lineage, the seriousness of the breeding and the follow-up offered. The overall cost must also include routine maintenance and expenses related to an active dog.

Health

Health at a glance

The Jagd Terrier is a robust, hardy and enduring dog, with overall solid health. The breed is not known for accumulating a large number of systematic frailties, but regular monitoring remains important, especially in very active individuals.

Prevention and things to watch for

Nutrition

Feeding your pet well

The Jagd Terrier needs a high-quality diet, rich in protein and adapted to its age, its size and its activity level. A moderately active companion dog will not have the same needs as an individual used regularly for hunting.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Jagdterrier

Answers to common questions from future owners before their new companion arrives.

Yes, it can live in an apartment if its exercise needs are genuinely met every day. Without sufficient activity, its energy and hunting instinct can become difficult to channel.

It may suit a motivated beginner, but it remains easier to manage for an active, consistent person who is ready to guide a lively dog with a strong hunting instinct.

Caution is recommended, as the breed retains a fairly pronounced prey drive. Early socialization improves cohabitation, but it does not completely eliminate this trait.
