Highland Straight: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The Highland Straight is born in Highland Fold litters when one of the parents does not carry the Fold gene, or when a kitten does not express the fold. It has the type and long coat of the Highland, but straight ears. Many breeders consider it an essential and safer partner for breeding. As a companion, it offers the “teddy bear” look without the cartilaginous risk of the fold.

Medium cat, compact to semi-compact, round head, full cheeks, large eyes. The ears are straight, medium-sized, well spaced. The coat is long, dense, with a ruff and a full tail. All colors exist. It differs from the British Longhair by the breeding history linked to the Scottish, even if the types are similar.

Gentle, sociable, fairly calm, sometimes more playful than the painful folds. He loves the family and adapts well to other cats. Calm children are well accepted. He is neither hyperactive nor distant.

Very good apartment cat. He plays, observes, then rests. Brushing is part of the routine. An enriched environment (scratching posts, hiding places, games) prevents boredom without requiring intensive exercise.

Litter box, scratching posts, getting used to brushing and transport. Measured food rewards work well. A stable routine suits him.

A Highland Straight is often between 900 and 1 800 euros, sometimes less than a fold. It is often the best comfort of life / aesthetics ratio in the Scottish family.

Without the Fold gene, it avoids the typical osteochondrodysplasia. The precautions for round-headed, long-haired cats remain: eyes, weight, hairballs, kidneys depending on the lines. A breeding program that uses Straights to avoid fold × fold is a good sign.

The Highland Straight needs a complete, digestible diet adjusted to its age, activity and body condition. Protein quality and control of energy intake matter as much as the size of the portion.

In fold litters, “Straight” are sometimes cheaper, even though they are often the most reasonable choice. Some registries register them separately. Visually, many families confuse them with a British Longhair.
