Diet

Feeding your American Curl well

United States

The American Curl needs a complete, high-quality diet, adapted to its age, its body condition, its activity level and any possible sterilization. The daily ration must be controlled to avoid weight gain.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Kitten : Choose a complete formula for growth, divided into several small meals and adjusted regularly to the weight.

  • Adult : Measure the ration according to ideal weight, activity and neutering in order to prevent overweight.

  • Senior : Have the needs reassessed by the veterinarian and favor an easily digestible diet adapted to renal, dental and body condition.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

Quality complete kibble or a complete wet diet may be suitable. A mixed diet is also possible. Wet food contributes to water intake, while kibble can be slightly moistened if the veterinarian advises it. The choice should prioritize quality animal proteins and a formula suited to the cat’s profile.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount depends on the energy density of the food, ideal weight, age and activity. It is advisable to follow the manufacturer's table, then adjust the portion with the veterinarian according to changes in weight and body shape.

WeightDaily amountMeals/day
3 - 4 kg54 - 78 g2
4 - 6 kg70 - 100 g2
6 - 7 kg86 - 121 g2

Change

Managing the food transition

Any change of food must be gradual over several days by mixing an increasing portion of the new food with the old. This transition limits digestive upsets and makes it possible to check good tolerance of the new formula.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Fresh, clean water that is regularly renewed must remain available at all times. Several water points or a fountain can encourage drinking, particularly when the diet is mostly dry.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be deducted from the daily ration. Small rewards suitable for cats can be used for training and getting them used to ear care.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh the daily ration rather than filling the bowl freely.
  • Adjust the quantity to activity level, ideal weight and neutering.
  • Encourage hydration with wet food or several water points.
  • Regularly monitor weight and body shape.

Never give

In particular, chocolate, onion, garlic, leek, grapes and raisins, alcohol, caffeine, cooked bones and products containing xylitol should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning or serious injuries. No human medication should be given without veterinary advice.
