Origins

Where does it come from?

The York Chocolat is a breed originating from the United States, which appeared in the early 1980s in the State of New York. Its development is linked to the selection carried out around a brown kitten named Brownie, born from matings between domestic cats. Its name refers to its traditional chocolate color and to its American cradle. The breed was then recognized in the early 1990s, then introduced later in Europe, while remaining today not very widespread.

It has a medium, rounded head, large ears wide at the base, oval eyes ranging from gold to green, as well as a well-furnished tail. Its medium-long coat is fine, dense and silky, with very little undercoat. The accepted coat color is mainly chocolate or lilac, with or without white depending on the standard.

Fun facts and popularity

The York Chocolate owes its name both to the State of New York and to its emblematic color.
