Diet

Feeding your Tosa well

Japan

The Tosa needs a quality diet, suited to large dogs and adjusted to its age, weight and activity level. The ration must support its muscle mass without promoting overweight.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : A growth diet for large breeds is essential to support development without excessively accelerating weight gain.

  • Adult : The ration must maintain muscle mass while keeping a lean, mobile silhouette.

  • Senior : In older dogs, a more digestible formula is preferred, with careful monitoring of weight and joint comfort.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

Premium complete kibble formulated for large or very large breeds generally suits the Tosa well. For the puppy, a large-breed growth formula should be preferred to support bone and joint development without excess energy.

Amounts

How much should you give?

Quantities vary according to weight, age, sterilization, activity and the energy density of the food. It is preferable to split the daily ration for better digestive comfort and to adjust intake according to the dog's actual body condition.

WeightDaily amountMeals/day
30 - 40 kg380 - 480 g2
40 - 55 kg480 - 620 g2
55 - 65 kg620 - 760 g2

Change

Managing the food transition

Any dietary transition must be gradual over about a week, or even longer in sensitive subjects. Gradually mixing the old and the new food helps to limit digestive disorders.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times. After exertion or in hot weather, the dog should be encouraged to drink calmly and intense activities should be avoided right after a large intake of water or food.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats must remain measured and be included in the calculation of the daily ration. For a powerful dog like the Tosa, they are mainly useful as a tool for training and motivation, not as a free supplement.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Split the daily ration into 2 meals.
  • Avoid intense exercise just before and just after meals.
  • Regularly weigh portions rather than feeding by eye.
  • Adjust the ration as soon as the silhouette gets heavier.

Never give

As with other dogs, you should avoid in particular chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, avocado, alcohol, sweeteners such as xylitol, cooked bones and very fatty foods, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or metabolic complications.
