Fila de São Miguel: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The Fila de Sao Miguel originates from the island of Sao Miguel, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. It is said to descend from ancient local herding and livestock guarding dogs, notably the now extinct Terceira Dog. Developed to work with cattle and protect farms, it remains a rare breed outside its native region.

The Fila de Sao Miguel is a robust, powerful and well-muscled dog, of a slightly rectangular format. Its head is strong, with a broad and rather square skull, with drooping triangular ears and very expressive dark brown eyes. Its coat is short, dense and of a harsh texture, and its coat color is most often fawn, charcoal sable or grey, obligatorily brindle, sometimes with a few white markings.

The Fila de Sao Miguel is a versatile, intelligent and loyal dog. Very attached to its owner and its family, it is docile with its own, but naturally wary of strangers. Its guarding instinct is pronounced, which makes it a good protector when it is well socialized and properly trained.

This dog needs space, activity and a clear framework. He enjoys long walks, games and exercises that engage both his body and his intelligence. He does not tolerate prolonged inactivity well and adapts with difficulty to apartment living, because he was selected for work and wide open spaces.

The training of the Fila de Sao Miguel must be early, consistent and firm without brutality. Its intelligence allows good progress, but its guarding temperament and its power require an experienced handler capable of establishing stable rules and working on socialization from the youngest age. Positive reinforcement and regularity give the best results.

The Fila de Sao Miguel is a rare breed, which can make the search for a reputable breeder longer than for more widespread breeds. The purchase price varies mainly depending on the quality of the breeding, the tests carried out on the breeding dogs, and the availability of the breed.

The Fila de Sao Miguel is overall a hardy and rather robust breed. It does not present any known major fragility, but its large size and powerful morphology require monitoring of the joints and careful management of exertion and meals.

The Fila de Sao Miguel needs a complete, good-quality diet, adapted to its age, size and activity level. As with other large dogs, regular meals and weight control are essential points.

The Fila de Sao Miguel is also known under the names Fila de Saint Miguel and Cão Fila de São Miguel. Despite its qualities as a working and guard dog, it remains little widespread outside the Azores, which makes it a breed still little known in many countries.
