A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : A growth diet for large dogs is recommended to support development without excessive energy intake.
Adult : The ration must cover endurance and muscle mass without promoting overweight, ideally in 2 meals per day.
Senior : The food is best made easier to digest, with increased monitoring of weight, mobility and appetite.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Premium kibble for large active dogs generally works well, provided it is digestible and suited to the life stage. In very athletic individuals or those sensitive from a digestive standpoint, the composition and energy density must be assessed with the veterinarian.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount varies according to weight, age, sterilization and exercise intensity. It is preferable to adjust the ration based on body condition and stool quality rather than following only a theoretical guideline.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 40 - 45 kg | 430 - 520 g | 2 |
| 45 - 50 kg | 500 - 590 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any dietary transition must be done gradually over several days in order to limit digestive disorders. Too rapid an introduction of a new food can cause discomfort, loose stools or refusal of the ration.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must be available at all times, especially after outings and in hot weather. Hydration deserves increased attention in this active dog, especially when exertion is sustained.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats can be useful for training, but they must remain moderate and included in the total daily energy intake. It is better to favor simple and digestible rewards in order to avoid weight gain.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Split the daily ration into 2 meals.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after meals.
- Regularly monitor the silhouette and muscle condition.
Never give
As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones and very fatty foods, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or promote pancreatitis.
