A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
Adult : Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.
Senior : Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Premium kibble formulated for large dogs or a balanced home-prepared ration designed by a professional may be suitable, provided that protein, mineral and energy needs are met. During growth, overly rich formulas that promote weight gain that is too rapid should be avoided.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount varies according to age, weight, activity level, season and individual metabolism. In this large dog, splitting meals and regularly adjusting the ration according to body shape are recommended.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 64 - 70 kg | 854 - 1152 g | 2 |
| 70 - 76 kg | 926 - 1248 g | 2 |
| 76 - 82 kg | 998 - 1344 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. The introduction of a new food is done in stages, gradually increasing the proportion of the new product.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, with increased vigilance during hot periods and after exercise. A dog of this size can have significant water needs, especially if it lives outdoors for part of the day.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats should remain occasional and be included in the overall energy intake. It is preferable to favor simple and digestible rewards, especially as part of training and socialization.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
- Avoid intense exertion just before and after the meal.
- Deduct training treats from the daily ration.
Never give
As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, avocado, alcohol, xylitol, cooked bones and leavened dough should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or potentially fatal complications.
