Diet

Feeding your Lagotto Romagnolo well

Italy

The Romagnol Water Dog needs a complete, digestible and well-balanced diet, with an appropriate content of quality animal proteins. Its activity level, its age, any sterilization and its tendency to gain weight must guide the choice of the ration.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Up to about 6 to 7 months, the ration is generally divided into 3 meals per day with a growth food suited to its size and its development curve.

  • Adult : In adulthood, 2 meals per day are most often suitable to better distribute energy intake and help stabilize appetite.

  • Senior : In older dogs, a more digestible ration with controlled energy helps maintain weight, muscle mass, and joint comfort.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

Premium kibble for medium-sized dogs generally suits this breed very well, provided that the formula is adapted to its age and activity level. A home-prepared or mixed diet can also be suitable if it is properly balanced with the help of a veterinarian.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount must be adjusted to the energy density of the food, the dog's actual weight, its body condition and its activity. It is preferable to discuss it with the veterinarian and to adjust the ration if the dog gains or loses weight.

Change

Managing the food transition

Any dietary transition must be done gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A gradual mix between the old and the new food makes it possible to observe digestive tolerance and to calmly adjust the quantities.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must remain accessible at all times, especially after exercise, in hot weather or during outdoor search activities. Good hydration contributes to overall comfort and recovery.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats can be useful for training and search games, but they must remain modest and be included in the daily ration. Rewards that are too frequent quickly promote overweight in a greedy dog.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh the ration rather than measuring it approximately.
  • Include treats in the total daily intake.
  • Regularly monitor the silhouette and body condition.
  • Adjust the ration according to actual activity and the season.

Never give

As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, avocado, alcohol, cooked bones, xylitol and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause digestive, neurological or metabolic disorders that are sometimes serious.
