A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Choose a formula for very large dogs and control the growth rate in order to protect the joints.

  • Adult : Adjust the ration to the activity and split it into two meals to limit large intakes.

  • Senior : Reassess the energy intake, weight and mobility with the veterinarian, while preserving muscle mass.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

A complete diet formulated for large or very large dogs is suitable, with an energy density and a mineral balance adapted to the life stage. The precise choice must be adjusted with a veterinarian according to body condition and activity.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount depends on actual weight, age, activity, body condition and the energy density of the food. It must be adjusted based on the manufacturer's recommendations and monitoring of the silhouette, then divided into two meals.

Change

Managing the food transition

Any change in diet must be gradual over about one week, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. A slower transition may be necessary if digestive disorders appear.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times, especially after walks and in hot weather. However, it is advisable to avoid massive, hurried intake right around intense exertion.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats should remain occasional, small in size and integrated into the daily energy intake. For training, part of the ration can be used in order to limit weight gain.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Split the daily ration into two meals.
  • Have the dog eat calmly.
  • Avoid physical activity during the half-hour before and after the meal.
  • Adjust portions according to body condition and activity.
  • Use a diet suitable for very large dogs.

Never give

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic, leek, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive lesions, pancreatitis or obstruction.
