A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Choose a growth food for a medium-sized dog and divide the ration into three meals before gradually moving to two.
Adult : Adapt a complete ration to the actual activity and regularly monitor the body shape to prevent overweight.
Senior : Favor an easily digestible formula, moderately energy-dense and supportive of muscle maintenance as well as joint comfort.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Complete, high-quality kibble that is digestible and suited to age as well as activity level works well. A balanced home-prepared diet can also be offered if it is formulated with a veterinarian in order to avoid deficiencies.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily quantity must be determined based on the manufacturer’s recommendations and then adjusted according to body condition, activity and the veterinarian’s advice. It is preferable to divide the ration in order to limit overly large meals.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 16 kg | 210 - 250 g | 2 |
| 17 kg | 220 - 260 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change in diet must be gradual over about a week, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. This transition helps preserve digestive comfort and makes it possible to quickly identify poor tolerance.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain accessible at all times, particularly after exercise and in hot weather. During hunting outings or long walks, regular hydration breaks are essential.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats should represent a small part of the daily energy intake. For training, favor very small pieces and subtract their contribution from the ration in order to limit weight gain.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh each portion with a kitchen scale.
- Split the daily food into two meals.
- Avoid running during the two hours following the meal.
- Adjust the amount according to body condition and activity level.
- Limit table scraps and subtract treats from the ration.
Never give
Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic, leek, avocado, macadamia nuts, alcohol, caffeine, xylitol and cooked bones are to be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders, internal lesions or serious neurological damage.
