Health

Siamese health

Thailand

The Siamese generally enjoys good health, but like any selected breed, it may present certain predispositions that must be monitored with regular veterinary follow-up. Its lifestyle, its diet and the quality of the breeding play an important role in its longevity.

Longevity

Life expectancy

The Siamese is one of the cat breeds that can live a long time when it benefits from good lifestyle hygiene, regular preventive monitoring and a suitable diet. A longevity of 15 to 21 years is possible, with many individuals remaining active and expressive until late in their life.

Build

A robust breed?

Its robustness is average. The Siamese is generally solid, but it requires particular attention to certain hereditary predispositions and tolerates less well than more rustic cats lifestyle mistakes or an environment poorly suited to its need for activity and contact.

Watch points

What to watch for

Vigilance must above all focus on hereditary conditions and on the impact of stress or boredom in this sensitive cat that is very attached to its habits. Serious breeding, regular check-ups and careful observation of changes in behavior are essential.

  • Amyloidosis : Predisposition to protein deposits that can notably affect the kidneys and liver and progressively impair their function.

  • Aortic stenosis : Congenital heart disease corresponding to a narrowing that disrupts the ejection of blood into the aorta.

Climate

Cold and heat tolerance

With its short coat and the absence of a marked undercoat, the Siamese is more comfortable in a temperate indoor environment than in a cold climate. It appreciates warm places and comfortable bedding, while strong heat requires shade, fresh water and good ventilation.

Weight

Tendency to gain weight

The Siamese is an active cat, but its weight must remain monitored to preserve its slender silhouette and mobility. A measured ration, quality food and daily play help prevent weight gain without frustrating a cat that is very demanding of interaction.

Daily life

Good habits to keep it healthy

  • Schedule an annual veterinary check-up, then more frequent ones with age.
  • Monitor any decrease in appetite, unusual fatigue, or change in thirst.
  • Maintain a stimulating environment to limit stress and boredom.
  • Choose a breeder that is transparent about health history.

Vaccination

Siamese vaccines: vaccination schedule

Which vaccines for a Siamese? Like all dogs, the Siamese receives essential vaccines from 8 weeks old: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. The puppy primary vaccination for Siamese is given in several injections 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on its lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may complete the protocol with vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

Adult Siamese vaccine boosters are annual for leptospirosis and rabies; for distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often sufficient after the first booster. Your veterinarian will adjust the schedule to your dog’s actual risk.

Adopting well

Adopting a healthy Siamese

Veterinary follow-up including an annual clinical examination, heart monitoring, kidney function checks according to age, and verification of oral and dental status is relevant. In case of family history, targeted screening with the veterinarian may be recommended.
