A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
Adult : Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.
Senior : Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Premium kibble formulated for large or very large dogs generally provides a suitable base, with sufficient intakes of proteins, vitamins and minerals. The ration must remain consistent with the dog's age, activity, body condition and digestive tolerance.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount varies according to age, sex, metabolism and activity, and must be adjusted rigorously to avoid overweight during growth as well as in adulthood. In this large dog, it is better to favor structured meals and regular monitoring of body condition.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 50 - 53 kg | 670 - 906 g | 2 |
| 53 - 57 kg | 710 - 960 g | 2 |
| 57 - 60 kg | 750 - 1013 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A change that is too abrupt can disrupt appetite, stools and intestinal comfort, especially in a large dog.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must be accessible at all times, particularly after exercise, during summer and during shedding periods. Good hydration contributes to overall comfort, recovery and the proper functioning of the body.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats can be useful in training and in the relationship, provided they remain simple, digestible and given in moderation. They must be included in the calculation of the daily ration to avoid excess calories.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Split the daily ration into at least two meals to improve digestive comfort.
- Adjust the ration to actual activity and body condition rather than to theoretical weight alone.
- Choose a diet for large dogs with controlled energy density during growth.
- Introduce any change of food gradually over several days.
Never give
As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, avocado, cooked bones, alcohol, raw bread dough and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause digestive or neurological disorders or sometimes severe poisoning.
