Health

The Kromfohrländer's health

Germany

The Kromfohrländer is generally a hardy dog with a fairly good constitution. Like many breeds with limited distribution, it nevertheless requires serious selection in order to reduce the risk of certain hereditary conditions, notably affecting the paw pads and the knee.

Longevity

Life expectancy

With a life expectancy of around 12 to 14 years, the Kromfohrländer can accompany its family for a long time when its diet, physical activity, and veterinary follow-up are well adapted. Its longevity also depends on the quality of the breeding and the prevention of hereditary problems.

Constitution

Is this a robust breed?

This dog shows adequate robustness, without being among the most rustic breeds. It tolerates a fairly active life quite well, but its monitoring must remain attentive from an orthopedic and dermatological standpoint. Good lifestyle hygiene largely helps to maintain its overall condition.

Things to watch for

What to look out for

Vigilance focuses mainly on hereditary conditions listed in the breed and on regular observation of the paw pads, gait, and locomotor comfort. Any sign of lameness, plantar sensitivity, or joint discomfort warrants prompt veterinary advice.

  • Hereditary paw pad hyperkeratosis: A genetic condition that can cause abnormal, painful thickening of the paw pads, with sensitivity and discomfort when walking.

  • Patellar luxation: Poor alignment of the knee joint can lead to limping, locomotor discomfort, and longer-term joint wear.

Climate

Tolerance to cold and heat

The Kromfohrländer is not among the breeds most comfortable in extreme climates. Its tolerance to cold as well as heat remains average to low, which justifies avoiding intense exertion during very hot periods and offering it a sheltered sleeping place in cold or damp weather.

Weight

Prone to weight gain

The breed is not particularly known for a strong tendency to become overweight, but balance remains important to preserve the joints. Portions adjusted to actual activity, monitoring body condition and regular walks help maintain a healthy weight.

Everyday care

Good habits to keep your pet healthy

  • Regularly check the paw pads after outings.
  • Consult in case of limping or abnormal gait.
  • Maintain a stable weight to protect the joints.
  • Ensure preventive veterinary follow-up throughout life.

Vaccination

Kromfohrländer vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Kromfohrländer need? Like all dogs, Kromfohrländers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Kromfohrländer vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

Adult Kromfohrländer booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

Adopting a healthy Kromfohrländer

A standard veterinary follow-up, combined with particular attention paid to the knees and the quality of the paw pads, is recommended. In a breeding dog or a dog from an at-risk line, the value of targeted screening can be discussed with the breeder and the veterinarian.
