Feeding

Feeding your Kai well

Japan

The Kai needs a complete and highly digestible diet, adapted to its age, its size and above all to its activity level. The quality of the ration plays an important role in maintaining its muscle mass, its ideal weight and the quality of its coat.

A menu for every age

Their needs change as they grow

  • Puppy: Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.

  • Adult: Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.

  • Senior: Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Good-quality kibble for a medium-sized and active dog generally suits the Kai well, with a balanced composition and an energy density adjusted to its daily exercise. In the case of a home-prepared or mixed ration, the nutritional balance must be validated with a veterinarian.

Portion sizes

How much should you feed?

The daily amount must be adjusted according to weight, age, body condition, neutering and activity level. A very active Kai will not have the same needs as a more sedentary subject, and the ration must be reviewed regularly.

Changing food

How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary transition must be done gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A change that is too abrupt can lead to loose stools, refusal of the new food, or digestive discomfort.

Hydration

Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Hydration is particularly important after exertion, in hot weather and for very active dogs.

A little extra

Treats in moderation

Treats can be useful for the Kai’s training if they remain measured and integrated into the overall ration. It is preferable to favor simple, low-fat rewards to avoid excess calories.

Good habits

Make mealtimes count

  • Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
  • Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
  • Deduct training treats from the daily ration.

Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, avocado, alcohol, cooked bones, xylitol and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause severe digestive disorders, poisoning or neurological and kidney damage.
