Longevity
Life expectancy
Its lifespan is generally around 12 to 14 years. A balanced diet, regular activity, maintaining a stable weight and preventive care help preserve its vitality throughout its life.
Build
A robust breed?
The breed has a solid constitution, well-developed musculature and excellent adaptation to Nordic conditions. This hardiness does not exempt from monitoring after prolonged exertion, regular coat maintenance and preventive veterinary check-ups.
Watch points
What to watch for
No specific pathological predisposition is highlighted by the reference sheet. It is nevertheless advisable to monitor locomotion, the eyes, the skin under the dense undercoat and the general condition, then to consult promptly in the event of lameness, visual discomfort, persistent itching or an unusual decrease in activity.
Hip dysplasia : Like many dogs, the Finnish Lapphund can have a joint malformation that promotes pain and osteoarthritis, especially in cases of overweight.
Eye conditions : An ophthalmological examination of breeding dogs and monitoring for tearing or vision issues remain useful.
Otitis and skin allergies : Itching, redness, or dirty ears should be checked, especially if the dog works in cover.
Climate
Cold and heat tolerance
Its fine, dense undercoat gives it excellent resistance to cold, wind and bad weather. On the other hand, its efforts must be spared in very hot weather, shade and fresh water should be provided, outings should be preferred during the coolest hours and its double coat should never be shaved.
Weight
Tendency to gain weight
The reference indicates a strong tendency to gain weight. Portions must therefore be adjusted to actual activity, treats counted in the daily intake and the silhouette checked regularly. Sustained and progressive physical exercise helps maintain its musculature without joint overload.
Daily life
Good habits to keep it healthy
- Schedule a veterinary check-up at least once a year.
- Monitor weight and maintain regular daily activity.
- Inspect the skin, ears, and paw pads after outings.
- Brush more frequently during the two shedding periods.
- Avoid sustained exertion during hot hours.

Finnish Lapphund vaccines: vaccination schedule
Which vaccines for a Finnish Lapphund? Like all dogs, the Finnish Lapphund receives essential vaccines from 8 weeks old: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. The puppy primary vaccination for Finnish Lapphund is given in several injections 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on its lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may complete the protocol with vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

Adopting well
Adopting a healthy Finnish Lapphund
Even in the absence of any particular predisposition reported, a serious breeding operation must present breeding dogs monitored by a veterinarian and provide transparent health information. Examinations of the hips, elbows and eyes can usefully complement the monitoring of the bloodlines of an active herding dog.
