Feeding

Feeding your Cavapoo well

Australia

The Cavapoo needs a complete and digestible diet, formulated for a small companion dog with a moderate activity level. The quality of the ingredients, the energy balance and the adjustment of the ration to its age, its weight and its activity are the foundations of good health.

A menu for every age

Their needs change as they grow

  • Puppy: Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.

  • Adult: Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.

  • Senior: Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium kibble for small dogs often constitutes a practical solution, with an adapted energy density, good-quality proteins and an easy-to-grab bite size. Depending on the dog’s profile, a wet or mixed ration may also be suitable if it remains complete and well balanced.

Portion sizes

How much should you feed?

The daily quantity must be adjusted according to weight, actual activity, age and possible sterilization. In the Cavapoo, it is preferable to weigh the ration and divide it into fixed meals to avoid overconsumption.

Changing food

How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary change must be made gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A gentle transition also makes it easier to identify the dog's tolerance to its new diet.

Hydration

Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain accessible at all times. Hydration deserves special attention in hot weather, after exercise and in dogs fed mainly with a dry diet.

A little extra

Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be included in the calculation of the daily ration. They are useful in training, but it is better to favor small quantities that are easy to digest so as not to promote weight gain.

Good habits

Make mealtimes count

  • Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
  • Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
  • Deduct training treats from the daily ration.

Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders, or neurological and cardiac damage.
