The Canaan Dog shows an appreciable overall robustness and tolerates heat well as well as fairly demanding living conditions. Its double coat protects it properly, and its morphology without exaggeration contributes to its sturdiness. What to look out for
Veterinary vigilance focuses mainly on the locomotor system, in particular the hips, as well as on maintaining a good weight and appropriate musculature. As the breed can be rare depending on the country, it is useful to inquire about the tests carried out by the breeder and about the lineage history. Simple but constant monitoring helps to keep a functional and well-balanced dog.
Hip dysplasia: A malformation or joint laxity may appear in some individuals and justifies vigilance regarding selection, growth and maintaining a correct weight.
Climate
Tolerance to cold and heat
The Canaan Dog tolerates heat very well and cold correctly thanks to its dense undercoat and its historical adaptation to contrasting environments. In hot periods, outings must remain compatible with its activity level and take place at the mildest hours if the effort is sustained. In cold or wet weather, its coat protects it well, but drying after a rainy outing remains useful.

This breed is not known for a major tendency toward obesity, but any less active or overly pampered dog can gain weight. It is important to weigh the portions, adjust energy intake to the actual level of exercise and regularly monitor the silhouette. A lean, toned and well-muscled dog protects its joints better over time.

Which vaccines does a Canaan Dog need? Like all dogs, Canaan Dogs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Canaan Dog vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

Adult Canaan Dog booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.
